LG…A move by a contractor to devastate and modify the mainstream Gorodom Market, Oke-Arin, Lagos Island in Lagos State has been ended by the Lagos Island Local Government Area.

The contractor, as per the dealers, in a few letters to them, had professed to have the committee’s sponsorship to pulverize and revamp the market, a circumstance which had tossed the brokers into disarray.

Notwithstanding, the committee during a challenge driven by a human rights gathering, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, HURMA, and merchants against the contractor’s transition to initiate the obliteration of the market, said it has not awarded the advancement of the market to any contractor and that there was no arrangement to destroy the market until further notice.

The Lagos Island chamber executive, Mr. Olutoyose Olushi guaranteed dealers at the mainstream Gorodom Market, Oke-Arin, that it was not setting out on any type of decimation or redevelopment of stores and shops in the market. Tending to the brokers on the chamber’s position, Mr. Yusuf Olayigbade, Chief of Staff to Mr. Olushi encouraged the dealers to proceed with their business as the government has no arrangement to pulverize and modify the market now.

Yussuf who is additionally the committee’s Officer-In-Charge of Works and Housing stated: “I am guided by the administrator to address the brokers in Mogbonjubola court, Gorodomu. “Mogbonjubola square was given to the contractor in 2004 and the agreement was for a long time. The contractor presently came down to the local government that he needed to recharge it, we asked him on what premise? We have to get notification from the merchants.

“It was in perspective on that, that the executive guided me here, that I should caution every one of the dealers that they should all stay in their shops, that is the situation of the gathering for the present. “As it is currently, Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State is guaranteeing the merchants that it has no arrangement with any contractor or engineer to obliterate and remake any structure in the market.”

Speaking on the improvement, HURMA’s Executive Director, Comrade Buna stated: “The dealers were compromised by a contractor, who asserted that he was given an endorsement by the committee, to crush and recreate that showcase, in view of that we appealed to the chamber on his position/guarantee.”
